Trading in your car for $25,000.00 means you pay 7% sales tax on $20,000.00 instead of $45,000.00: $1,400.00 instead of $3,150.00. The trade-in saves you $1,750.00 in sales tax.

So to sell your car privately instead, you need at least $26,750.00 to come out even: the dealer's $25,000.00 plus the $1,750.00 of tax you would no longer save.

What Is a Car Trade-In?

A trade-in is when you give your current car to the dealer as part of buying your next one. The dealer offers you a price for it, and that amount comes off the price of the new car. It is quick and easy: the dealer handles the paperwork, and you don't have to advertise your car, meet buyers or arrange test drives.

A trade-in can also save you sales tax. In most U.S. states, sales tax on a car is charged only on the price after the trade-in is taken off, not on the full price. That saving is called the trade-in tax credit. A few states, such as California, tax the full price no matter what you trade in, so check your state's rule.

Trade-in or private sale?

  • Trade-in: fast and simple, and it lowers the sales tax on your new car. The dealer usually offers less than a private buyer would pay.
  • Private sale: usually a higher price, but it takes more time and effort, and you lose the sales tax saving. A private sale is only worth it if the price beats the trade-in offer plus that tax saving.

How to Calculate Trade-In Tax Savings

With a trade-in, the sales tax is charged on the difference between the new car's price and the trade-in offer:

Tax with trade-in=(Price−Trade-in)×Tax rate

So the trade-in saves the tax on its own value:

Tax saved=Trade-in×Tax rate

To match the trade-in deal, a private buyer has to pay you the dealer's offer plus the tax you would no longer save:

Break-even price=Trade-in×(1+Tax rate)

Example

A $45,000 new car, a $25,000 trade-in offer and a 7% sales tax:

  • Tax with the trade-in = ($45,000 − $25,000) × 0.07 = $1,400.00
  • Tax without it = $45,000 × 0.07 = $3,150.00
  • Tax saved = $25,000 × 0.07 = $1,750.00
  • Break-even private sale price = $25,000 × 1.07 = $26,750.00
  • A private offer of $26,000 is $1,000 more than the dealer's offer, but $750.00 less than the break-even price, so trading in is still better.

How to Use the Auto Trade-In Calculator

"The dealer offers $25,000 for my old car toward a $45,000 new one. How much does trading in save me in sales tax, and how much would I need to sell it for privately to do better?" This calculator answers that.

Let's enter the numbers for this example in each box. They are already filled in when the calculator opens, so you can follow along and then change any box to match your own deal.

  • Vehicle Sales Tax: Enter 7, which is the sales tax rate in percent for cars where you live. Enter 0 if your state has no sales tax. It must be below 100.
  • New Vehicle Price: Enter 45,000, which is the price of the car you are buying, before tax. It must be greater than 0.
  • Trade-In Offer: Enter 25,000, which is what the dealer offers for your current car. It can be from 0 up to the new vehicle price.
  • Private Offer: Leave it blank, which means you have no private offer to compare. If a private buyer has offered you a price, for example $26,000, enter it to see whether it beats trading in. It must be 0 or more.

Calculate and Reset

Click Calculate to see your results. If a box has a problem, such as a trade-in offer above the car's price, a message pops up under that box instead. With the default numbers you get:

  • Your Results: a short summary in words: the tax you pay with and without the trade-in, the $1,750.00 you save, and the break-even private sale price. With a private offer, it also tells you which option is better and by how much.
  • Break-Even Private Sale Price: the headline number, $26,750.00.
  • Sales Tax Saved, Tax With Trade-In, Tax Without Trade-In and Taxed Amount: $1,750.00 saved, $1,400.00 versus $3,150.00 of tax, charged on $20,000.00. With a private offer, the last box shows which option is better and by how much instead.
  • Sales tax you pay: two bars comparing the tax with and without the trade-in.
  • Break-even private sale price: one bar made of the dealer's offer and the tax saved. A private offer shows as a dark line: past the end of the bar, selling privately is better.
  • Share Results: a link that opens this calculator with your numbers filled in. Copy it, or share it on Facebook or X.

Amounts of $1 million or more are shortened, for example $1.25M. Click Reset to put every box back to its default (and clear the private offer) and show the default results again.
